Hiding away in the upstairs lounge of the ever-stylish Bloc store, Cool Food café got the huskies squee-ing (yes, that's a word) over the modern furniture and stylish décor and yes, the coffee in the air may have induced some pre-lunch hype as well. We had to round ourselves up and sit down before we bought everything in the store - typography prints, vintage cushions and sexy stationery to boot.
Facing the Normanby Hotel, the Bloc building's geometric glass panels and steel beams give a nod towards the Bauhaus movements, imparting a contemporary energy to the air of this buzzing café. We were instantly hooked on the conversational “Food for Thought” cards that arrived with our cutlery (“Do spoons spoon?”), as well as the cube-y table number.
There were some curious items on the board too, including the 'Building Blocs menu', allowing you to mix-and-match breakfast components to create the any variation of a random and unique meal. Among the weird and wonderful: Homemade Crumpets, “Real” Chocolate Milkshake, and “Hug in a Mug” which an interesting selection of sweetened teas. There's a good variety of gluten free options too. Choice!
Louise had the Build-Your-Own Bloc Breakfast with rocket, parmesan, haloumi, bacon and a poached egg and Hug in a Mug and drank Hakanoa Ginger Beer. She said 'Smallish kitchen, menu and cabinet range on offer but suited us all - we all found something to have, and something to choose next time. I am guessing that I got the dregs of the Ginger Beer concentrate (before they took it off the menu) so my drink was very strong and overpowering, and came before my lunch (which was a big adjustment for the tastebuds). Still happy with my order though. Loved that it was based in a corner of a giant homeware store, but for four girls, this is a pretty dangerous place to be!'
Innie had the Scrambled Eggs with Haloumi and a Coffee (with eightythree coffee bean!). She said 'This cafe is my new favourite place! They have furniture/craft/art/beauty and everything else that will make me go broke...so I think I will just enjoy the great coffee and the atmosphere for now.'
Katie had the Chicken and Avocado Panini and a Hug in a Mug & Passion Flower. She said 'Amazing atmosphere surrounded by designer furniture! The panini was fresh and loved how it was served on a wooden platter. Would gladly buy all the prints on the walls home, too. Awh man.'
