The little café space on the corner of Sainsbury Road and Morningside Drive has changed hands intermittently in the last few years and this one looks like it's here to stay. Geeks On Sainsbury has delighted Sandringham residents with wonderfully aromatic coffee (hollah Red Rabbit), a chic, classy atmosphere, stylish hipster vibes with edible flowers to boot. If the name doesn't already give it away, the décor gives a humble nod to geek-chic with metal-piped chairs, a feature chalkboard detailing coffee extraction and light-boxes labelled “coffee geeks” and “kitchen geeks” - we need one of those light thingies in our office stat. We weren't sure if it was the terrariums or the white tiling, but as we stepped in the door, we were reminded of Dr Jervois... and right we were. The same genius minds behind the Ponsonby café and Little King in Milford are behind this new offering. When it comes to the food, we were delighted with the little details: warmed bowls, finely-sliced agria stacks and creamy caramel icecream with chunky granola waffles. Get there early and you might just nab the last table. Long live the geeks.
Louise had the chicken quinoa salad and a mocha. She said 'Loved the korean hipsters, loved the food, loved the vibe. Only improvement would be if the space (and perhaps my coffee) were a little more generous in size. Will definitely be back.'
Innie had the salmon bagel + banana waffle to share and a lemon and ginger tea. She said 'hot geeks in the house!'
Katie had the quinoa salad with chicken thigh, garden greens, feta and pumpkin. She said 'What? Dear Jervois peeps just round the corner? I'll be going there for lunch everyday, thanks.'
Mel had the salmon bagel + banana waffle to share and a green smoothie. She said ' love this place, visually the food was amazing, flavour amazing ... my new favourite!!'
Joe had the eggs benedict w/ bacon and a yellow smoothie. He said 'Bacon had a little too much rind, yellow smoothie lacked a bit of flavour, but overall an excellent suburban local with strong menu. A new personal favourite.'
Annie had the kale bagel and a berry smoothie. She said 'The food was so good! Beautiful presentation on all the dishes, though the plates super high sides made it hard to cut the bagel. It looked small when it was delivered but I left satisfied. Will be back.'
