L'Oeuf (french for 'the egg') in Owairaka is a much-awaited and long-overdue addition to an area of Auckland somewhat deprived of decent eating establishments. It's the culinary culmination of brothers Jasper and Ludo Maignot, whom we recognised from one of our local coffee haunts, Pyrenees in Mt Albert.
Décor-wise, L'Oeuf has lots of cute details including the industrial light shades, black pipe + beech-wood chairs and cute loquats in jars. Though the large empty walls, one of which is pale salmon (!) let the aesthetic down a bit (not that we are in any way experts on interiors), we were pretty impressed with it all, especially as it was only 6 days old at the time of our visit.
We were hooked on and intrigued by the multicultural dish options, and the creative names that come with it! To choose a Hunter, Morrocan, or a Cambodian? Lou was sold on the Geisha.
Our waitress was very sweet and attentive and, though she couldn't remember who ordered what, was quickly forgiven when the impeccable meals were delivered. With authentic french pastries to take away, along with cute jars of almond butter, L'Oeuf has already proved it's worth and there have been several subsequent visits.
Note: L'Oeuf is not open on Tuesdays.
Note 2 to parents: L'Oeuf is perfectly situated a few hundred metres walk from the local skate park if you, like Lou, happen to spend a lot of time there.
Louise had the Geisha (soba salad tossed in Japanese sesame dressing topped with pickled ginger & chicken) and a Mocha. She said 'The salad was huge and sensational - generous in size, totally delish and packed full of flavour. Healthy too. A+. Would trade again.'
Innie had the Russian (lemon vodka salmon tartare with free-range egg, cream cheese & seeded toast) and a Latte. She said 'What a great gem in an unexpected neighbourhood. The presentation was just so awesome, I had to take a few minutes to appreciate the beauty!'
Katie had the Hunter (creamy portobello mushrooms with chorizo, truffle oil & parmesan) and a Coconut and Yoghurt Smoothie. She said ' The smoothie in a milk bottle + paper straw is too cute. Mushrooms a lil too acidic for me, but nice n' hearty!
