When Janina sent us the location for this week's Husky lunch date we were slightly perplexed by the lack of a café name. Was she going to bring us to her aunt's place? Or perhaps it will be a surprise picnic… or is she going to murder us in some alleyway? 589 Mt Eden Road turned out to be none of those things. Melodrama dissolved.
This classy establishment leads a double identity of a relaxed, pseudo-retro café by day (alias: Next Door Café) – and fabulous fine-dining at night (alias: Bowmans). Next Door definitely is not your average neighbourhood café – they could pull of a complete breakfast, lunch, dinner and degustation menu in a day, is that a reason for ovation or what? And check out Bowman's food photography, we were going gaga.
Service was chillaxed in classic kiwi fare but remained professional and attentive - the staff even laid out colouring pages for Reuben before he'd arrived! Food, as you can guess, was terrific to the T. You can tell the effort placed in Bowmans remained consistent – even Janina's unassuming fried eggs were presented in a little copper pan on a wooden plate, (slight order-envy).
Louise had the Thai Chicken Salad with Peanuts, Kaffir Lime, Mung Beans, Coriander and Vermicelli and a Mocha. She said 'I was especially impressed by the special provisions for the kidlet at our table (including kids'drinks, colouring-in and special attention from the waitress). Most vitally though, the meal - oh my stars, I had the cleanest plate in the room! So yum. I would definitely go back just to have that salad again.'"
Innie had the Home-made Crossiants with Ham, Brie, Tomato and Basil. She said 'Very impressed by the range of menu options, definitely going back!'
Katie had the Jerk Pork Sandwich with with Tomato, Cucumber, Avocado, Slaw and French Fries. She said 'Food presentation and proportions are great. And great also meaning huge - first time not being able to clean off my plate! So bringing people here.'
