Blink and you might miss it — Sprout Café made us do a collective double-take as the newbies especially weren't expecting a revamped petrol station. Tucked away from the busy-foodie-district that is New North Road, the signature service-station roofing and steel columns still remain, providing a handy carpark and open-shelter for tables. We loved the quirky details such as their “crated-off” play area for kids, vietnamese flavours dotted in their menu and cool enamel-ware. The meals were generally loved by the Huskies all round, except, perhaps, for the Vietnamese fish sauce — it was way too chilli-fied (yes, that's a word) and left us (read:Lou) in a coughing/water-guzzling fit. Well all except Annie. Because she's from Wanaka and Wanakian's are badass.
Louise had the shared lemongrass chicken platter and green smoothie with kale, cucumber, apple & mint. She said 'Unfortunately my first mouthful was the teeniest taste of the chilli dressing that came with the chicken platter by dipping the end of my fork in – it fully sent me into a coughing fit, tears streaming, the works. Never had a chilli reaction like that before. After I recovered, the chicken was the nicest part, the rice paper rolls unremarkable and the iceberg lettuce very yellow. Disappointed as Vietnamese is normally a guaranteed winner for me.'
Innie had the smoked fish and prawn cake with poached egg and a latte. She said 'surprisingly filling! Coffee was good. Coffee lab coffee doesn't betray you!'
Katie had the bacon-wrapped soft eggs with panko crumb, served with tomato basil salsa & hash cake. She said 'Perfectly gooey yolk with a savoury crispy bacon/panko shell. Dude, I'm in heaven.'
Mel had the shared lemongrass chicken platter and green smoothie with kale, cucumber, apple & mint. She said 'the platter was yummy but the dipping sauce, wowza that was a little too hot for my taste buds! I loved the smoothie, it felt so healthy and tasted so good!'
Joe had the bacon-wrapped soft eggs with panko crumb, served with tomato basil salsa & hash cake and a green juice. He said 'All & all a pretty darn tidy establishment for the suburbs.'
Annie had the mushroom, chèvre and caramelised onion wholegrain tart and a beet, orange, ginger, lemon and apple juice. She said 'The tart was delicious, great flavours for a mushroom lover.'
