Sad as we were about the disappearance of Woodworks, we’d heard a wee bit of hype about the new happenings in this little Avondale eatery under a new dream-team (ex-Gemmayze peeps apparently). We loved the corner of bouquets provided by Greenpoint Florist and the on-point service — Lou’s littlies joined us and the Te Whau staff helpfully provided us some paper and pens to entertain them.
Everyone got a bit of order envy care of the pancakes (with mango sorbet!) and the chilli scramble – the aromas of the house-made sambal and shiitake mushrooms get us drooling even now. Te Whau are also part of the Everybody Eats social initiative Tuesday to Thursday nights! All round great food and people. Ka pai Te Whau, you guys are awesome.
Louise had the Potatoes with pastrimi, caramelised onion, red pepper sauce and a poached egg and drank two (!) Coconut Flat Whites. She said "The instagram version of this meal looked a bit more promising than the IRL version but this was well made up for with the excellent service by our waitress on her first day (excellent employment decision!) and the exceptional coconut flat white. So good I had two of them."
Katie had the Chicken Schnitz Sandwich with brioche, pesto and cabbage slaw and drank a Latte. She said "The waitress kindly provided us with some paper and pens to draw with the kiddos — it was fun! Chicken Schnitz was made fresh, black sesame seeds in the batter made it super tasty and paired well with the savory pesto and sweet cabbage slaw. Lovelovelove."
Bri Pancakes with Mango Sorbet, creme fraiche and brown butter cereal crunch and drank a Long Black. She said "Unique take on a pancake - appreciate the gelato instead of ice cream which was very refreshing and the crunchy granola for texture. Presentation was beautiful."
Jeffrey had the Chilli Scramble with house sambal, shiitake mushrooms, goats cheese, coriander and sourdough and drank a Long Black. He said "Friendly service and food was very tasty."
Phil had the Dukkah Roti Bread with spiced lamb mince, cucumber, pickled radish, tahini and yoghurt; and drank a Banana & Charcoal Smoothie. He said "Loved this place, Flight coffee is always so good, food was tasty and creative."
