Intrigued, having never heard of the place, the Huskies piled into the family wagon and tootled up to Eden Terrace, a mere 3 minute drive, to visit the Sandwich Club. Is it a café, a lunch bar, a café-come-lunch bar? We couldn't quite decide as we were ushered through the main area into the back room's only table that could accommodate six. Unfortunately it was a wee case of 'first impressions last' as the owner ushered out hovering fruit flies, hastily opened the windows and quickly shut the door of an overflowing storage cupboard. We brushed off what seemed to be either unused or unwiped seats and sat down. The service was intermittent and food, mostly cabinet, and coffee both arrived staggered at different times. However, the coffee was hot, the food was quite delicious and had that homely homemade goodness feel, underscoring the A food grade rating. Heading out, we noticed the front of house part of the café was completely full and also had people queuing for take-away cabinet and coffees – obviously The Sandwich Club are doing something right. Probably a bit more attention to the cleanliness of the back room would have transformed our experience but perhaps they are better geared towards the ‘grab and go' clientele of the Eden Terrace workforce.
Louise had the spicy kumara soup and a single shot flat white. She said "Loved the soup and the wonderful older woman who served it. Despite cleanliness not a seeming to be a priority, the café had an A rating and all tables were full. High five!"
Innie had the chicken, tomato and cheese sandwich and a spicy chai latte. He said "If you are in hurry but don't wanna get McDonalds, go here!"
Mel had the poached eggs on toast and a hopt pear soda. She said "Was a little underwhelmed, not sure they were all that confident of what they were doing. Place could do with a jolly good clean, BUT here comes the nice bit, I did enjoy my eggs on toast!"
Joe had the steak and cheese pie and a humble honey soda. He said "I think this place is still finding itself. Pretty good for a somewhat tuckshop style place though."
Emilie had the ham cheese sandwich (I actually ordered chorizo but order went wrong) and a soy flat white. She said "The all press coffee was so good. Hard to find a good soy-flat-white place but this one is quite good :)"
Rikki had the BLAT toasted sandwich and a berry smoothie. She said "The people were really nice and my sandwich was yummy. Plus its just nice going out for lunch :)"
