GORILLA KITCHEN

www.gorillakitchen.nz

Gone are the days where the term “vegan cafe” brings to mind sparse plates of greens, funky tasting lattes and tables filled with yoga-bunnies in activewear. Places like the Gorilla Kitchen deliver hearty burgers and thick shakes packed with flavour that screams “comfort food”. We were pretty impressed with the range of options on offer — there’s multiple meatless meat patties to pick from, mylks for the milkshakes and even the type of breads. We had lots of fun closing our eyes trying vegan cheese, really judging the texture and taste — to be honest, with the salsa in the nachos and burgers, it was dang near impossible to tell the difference. Stoked to find you guys gorilla, the world needs to know you.

Louise shared the Cornucopia with crispy gf corn fritters, sauteed kale and baby corn, coconut bacon, ‘feta,’ avo smash and salsa verde. She also shared the Nachos with wholegrain corn chips, soy mince n beans, melted cheeze, chunky salsa, guacamole, pico de gallo, jalapenos and sour kream. She said, “I love plant-based food so I was intrigued to give it a whirl. Unfortunately the deep fried corn fritters needed more punch and flavour and the nachos, though generous portion, had nothing on the Butcher’s Son’s version. Waiter struggled enormously taking orders for 7 on his first day on the job but got there in the end. I would be keen to give it a second chance though ‘cos plant-based eating is worth it.”

Katie had the BBQ Bakon Chickun Cheese Burger with grilled chikun, bakon, tasty cheeze, onion, tomato, lettuce, mauka bbq sauce, garlic mayo, served with skin on chips. She drank
an Iced Chocolate with coconut cream. She said, “Very creative menu, someone try the Turkish delight French Toast and tell me about it please.”

Mel had the Gangnam Loaded Fries with chips, cheeze, kimchi, sriracha and mayo. She drank a Green Mojito. She said, “Great little spot, good portion sizes, the green mojito was excellent!”

Bri had the BBQ Bakon Chickun Cheese Burger with grilled chikun, bakon, tasty cheeze, onion, tomato, lettuce, mauka bbq sauce, garlic mayo, served with skin on chips. She drank a Choc-Nana Smoothie with organic cacao, dates, banana, vanilla and almond mylk. She said, “Great vegan fast food alternative, something for everyone. The chicken was convincing, portions are very generous. The loaded fries were so good!”

Jeffrey had the BBQ Bakon Chickun Cheese Burger with grilled chikun, bakon, tasty cheeze, onion, tomato, lettuce, mauka bbq sauce, garlic mayo, served with skin on chips. He drank a Green Ninja Smoothie with pineapple, coconut water, mint, spinach, banana and lime. He said, “Surprisingly good vegan food.”
