little bird - aug 2012
Though we drive through Kingsland all the time, we could be forgiven for obliviously scooting past the 'Little Bird Unbakery', tucked almost apologetically between monstrous buildings up more the industrial end. Before we ordered, we batted around the term 'unbakery' - what does that mean? Is it even a word? But it didn't take long perusing the menu and the goodies on the shelves to realise that this place was all about raw, organic, natural and nutritional unprocessed deliciousness.
The offerings on the menu were unusual to say the least, and with not one vegan among us, was a bit of a venture into the unknown. However, we really enjoyed what we had and the meat/dairy content missing from a more typical 'full-spectrum' menu was made up for in spades by taste and flavour.
Only things to improve were expanding the space - there were only 2 tables and we took up most of one with 4 adults and a kid, and we had to wait awkwardly for that to come available. Not much available for kids on the menu (as well as no toybox etc). Also the waitress was not that friendly and slightly condescending to our questions about vegan ingredients - we were open and interested but it didn't seem that the feeling was mutual.
Here's an excerpt from their website:
"Here at little bird we believe our food should not only taste amazing, it should make you feel amazing too. And there are plenty of people who say it does. Raw foods naturally provide an abundance of nutrients that will make every cell in your body sparkle. That the best food is simply raw, organic and full of the good stuff."
had the Pad Thai and a Berry Smoothie. She said 'The Raw Pad Thai was A.MA.ZING. Thinking about it a lot ever since. Especially loved the coconut noodles. So so good!'
had the Organic Open Sandwich and a Chocolate Nut Milk. She said 'I had to bring down the flavour rating down because it tasted 'HEALTHY'. No offense, but Friday lunch shouldn't be so healthy...although it did make up for the KFC I had on Thursday. Don't get me wrong - it was good! And I will probably will buy their muesli and macarons! It just wasn't my usual Friday lunch.
had the Raw Pad Thai. She said 'Was surprised by the coconut noodles - good crunch in the cashews and loved the thai-ese (thai-ese?) spices and lemon-grass mixed in there - and it was surprisingly filling!
How good was it?
