HUMBUG CAFE

We almost wanted to keep this place as a little secret to ourselves, but since we kept hearing excited whispers about the child-friendly lounge and unique menu it’d probably get around anyway. Plus we’re always for supporting local businesses, and this busy little vintage cafe is no exception. Humbug sits just off the beaten track, between Titirangi Road and West Coast Road but when we pulled in it was filled to the brim with coffee-drinkers (Millers Coffee they say, a deep boutique roast that had us mmm’ing).

The cabinet was well stocked with a gorgeous range of savouries and sweets (we loved their cinnamon marzipan ball – gluten-free!); and their shelves had an rows of fair-trade food products and home-made teas (grapefruit and bitter lemon smelled like autumn) –pick up a bottle or two of old-school Foxton Fizz as well, it’s terrific.

The split interiors did live up to the rumours – there is an airy, glassy area that exudes a tranquil vibe (where all the book-readers and hipster locals hang to chat), while the homey lounge is a sort of communal area for parents to chillax on couches while the littlies go crazy with the toy box. Very customer-driven, much like the friendly service which we received even with a very complicated, bulk take-away order. We were on the way to see Michelle and little Ettie, have we lots of reasons to smile today or what?

Louise had the Coconut Chicken Salad and a Mocha. She said ‘We ordered 6 meals, 3 drinks and 4 sweet treats all to takeaway – the waitress was super-helpful, it was all served up mega-fast and with amazing attention to detail e.g. My chicken salad was split into hot & cold containers so the hot didn’t wilt the cold. Genius. And completely delish. Love Humbug.’

Innie had the Creamy Fettucine and a Latte. She said ‘What a great find out in west!’

Katie had the Haloumi Panini with Tomato Salad and Basil Pesto. She said ‘I want to go back to try everything… or even just to get a bowl of reuben’s beer-battered fries – so crunchy, so crunchy!’
