Barkers Foodstore Eatery
Just off the hustle of Ponsonby Central, Barker’s Foodstore & Eatery has this easy, tucked-away feel – like one of those places you wander into on a whim and end up loving. It’s cosy, friendly and has a kind of charm that makes you want to stay a little longer than planned.
Barker’s might be best known for their jams and sauces from down in Geraldine, but here in Ponsonby they’ve created something more – a laid-back eatery that brings their classic flavours to life in some seriously tasty ways. The menu makes great use of their own products (in a way that feels clever, not gimmicky), and the food is fresh, generous and full of flavour. You can even grab a few bottles to take home if something catches your tastebuds.
The staff are lovely – the kind who’ll happily chat or leave you to it – and there’s a proper local vibe, like they know half their customers by name. It’s also super dog-friendly, which we love. They’ve even got house-made dog treats and a “BARKer’s Wall of Fame” featuring all the neighbourhood pups who pop in. Class.
If you’re after a chill spot with good food, good people and a little bit of South Island soul, Barker’s is a solid pick. Feels like the kind of place you’ll keep coming back to without even meaning to.
Total spend – 4 people – $163.50
