Uncle Roy’s Place
Sometimes a place you walk past often finally gets its turn on the lunch list and that was very much the case with Uncle Roy’s. The coffee prices alone are enough to stop you mid-stride because $3.80 feels almost cheeky in this part of town, and there’s a definite buzz around that. The team were genuinely friendly and welcoming, which always sets the tone and the location makes it easy to imagine lingering a little longer with a coffee and watching the Ponsonby foot traffic roll by. The best position is at the window seat!
Food wise, it was a bit of a mixed bag but not without its moments. The salmon eggs bene showed up more than once and ranged from decent to done well, while the blueberry pancake was pleasant but didn’t quite deliver the flavour punch we were hoping for. All up, it’s a friendly local with sharp coffee pricing and solid people-watching potential. Maybe not a must-return when you’re spoilt for choice along Ponsonby Road, but worth ticking off the list and calling in when a good value coffee is the main agenda.
Total spend – 4 people – $115.51
Louise had salmon eggs bene. She said, “Rosti was very oily and deep fried, salmon a bit salmony and hollandaise a bit forgettable. Happy to have ticked it off the list though, especially with the buzz on their cheap coffees.”
Mel had the blueberry pancake and drank an organic apple juice. She said, “I really wanted to love this place more than I did, the flavour punch didn’t quite hit it for me. However the staff were really lovely and it’s in a super fab location.”
Sam had salmon eggs bene and drank a flat white. He said, “It’s a spot I walk past on the daily and have not been in yet and unfortunately can’t say I’ll be rushing back. There’s too many nice cafes along Ponsonby road with a better vibe. But it’s a good little people watching spot.”
Sarah had salmon eggs bene. She said, “The fact they serve coffees for $3.80 is wild! Friendly team and my food was done well.”
