When we think of Mt Eden Road cafes, our minds often fall somewhere between banofee and New York cheesecakes – little did we know tucked just around the corner – is another one of the Metro gems.
Olaf features an impressive range of German artisan breads, a tantalizing menu and a divine-looking sweets cabinet that enticed us right away (Innie couldn't keep her eyes off the raspberry brioche). For the curious ones, you could watch the organic loaves being crafted right in front of you, or just grab a corner to soak in the sun and aroma of fresh bread – hello baker's heaven.
Attention to detail is definitely one of their strengths – Reuben's croissants were served with a dainty selection of preserves (complete with the glass-jars-in-mini-wooden tray combo)—and since we were catching the drafts coming through the door, fleece mantles were provided for to keep us snuggly. How's that for being thoughtful.
Louise had the Roasted Chicken Sandwich and a Mocha. She said 'Really enjoyed my sandwich, the bread was particularly soft and fresh with a generous portion of chicken - I think the Huskies may be paying the price of the onion content though! Mocha was a bit disappointing but you can't win them all.'
Innie had the Olaf's Spaghetti Carbonara with crisp bacon, figs, parsley and a Latte. She said 'Good coffee, great food and excellent desserts! What else can I ask for? Hmm...great atmosphere...wait - they've got that too! Awesomeness!'
Katie had the Funghi con Pancetta with peppered pancetta, mushrooms gnocchi. She said 'A good portion size and very tasty dish - but what stole the show was the desserts! Still reminiscing on that custard and raspberry brioche...and that custard tart''_'
