PEEL TO PIP

peeltopip.com

The petite white bungalow on the corner of New North Road and Morningside Drive has had a brand new fitout it seems — what used to be a quaint eatery called Fat Boy Thai has been redressed with palette benches, string lights and a real, massive canopy of cherry tomatoes. We spent a large part of the time oogling at the budding fruit above us, wondering if customers ever sneaked a few from its vines.

The menu had its café staples — french toast and eggs bene, but then you’ve got some interesting goodies peppered throughout — sunny eggs with flatbread, hummus and tzatziki, black pudding(!) along crushed edamame instead of your normal green peas. Those with a sweet tooth can find some kiwiana flavours in the front cabinet: anzac caramel slices, chunky rocky road with dark, dark chocolate… and pineapple lump brownies. Their salted caramel milkshake with caramel popcorn and vanilla bean icecream was definitely a looker — wee bit on the milky side according to Em, but we were willing to forgive that with the wait-staff’s immaculate service and generous servings of avocado roses on our plates.

Thanks for the sunny seats and flavours, P ’n’ P — we’re glad to be neighbours.

Louise had the french toast and a mocha. She said “Mocha, though eight thirty, tasted entirely like a hot chocolate. And they forgot ma bacon! I am trying hard to get there with Peel to Pip and I am all about supporting the locals but sadly I still need a lot of convincing.”

Katie had the spiced eggs with bacon, flat bread, watercress, tzatziki, pumpkin humas and tomato salsa. She said “Happy with my order! Would eat again.”

Mel had the eggs bene with avocado and bacon and a hot toddy. She said “Cheerful, open and fun little local. Love the fresh herbs and tomato vines overtop of our heads and dotted around the place. Food was tasty, I’m keen to go again to try out what Katie had!”

Joe had the bleat and a hot toddy. He said “Really the focus on fresh produce. Great new-ish hidden gem in Kingsland.”

Emilie had the eggs bene with avocado and bacon and a salted caramel popcorn milk shake. She said “I wish the milkshake was cold ;)”
