Pastrami & Rye
We’ve been on the Ponsonby adventure since moving into the neighbourhood so it was time to swing by Pastrami & Rye for a quick lunch. We instantly felt the New York deli energy the moment we walked in thanks to the front of house team who were buzzing in the best way. A few of us went for the chicken schnitzel sandwich which looked the part with its golden crumb and crisp finish, but sadly the flavour didn’t quite rise to the occasion. Meanwhile the Reuben was having its main character moment at the table, packed with proper deli flavour and full of the confidence we wished all our sandwiches had. The Cuban also earned high praise with its fresh fillings and a pickle so good it almost stole the show. And yes, the cabinet sweets were calling to us like sirens, but we behaved. Just.
All in all, it is a great little spot when you want something fast, hot and a bit American in spirit. The space is bright, busy and very well designed and the team behind the counter kept the vibes high. We left feeling full, mildly envious of anyone who ordered better than we did and already planning a return visit so Lou can finally live her best Reuben life (also the namesake of her youngest son).
Total spend – 4 people – $87.50
Louise had the chicken schnitzel sandwich and drank a mocha. She said, “Was after the Crispy Chicken Roll but sadly they were out of stock, so settled for the Chicken Schnitzel sandwich which ended in a case of total order envy. Though it plated well and the chicken was beautifully cooked – tender on the inside, crispy on the outside – the whole dish was to me, lack-lustre and bland. I wanted it to taste as good as it looked but alas. Next time I will go for the Reuben which looked legit and full of flavour – loved the crisps and pickles (very American) tho I was bereft they went to everyone else but me, ha!”
Mel had the Reuben sandwich and drank a decaf flat white. She said, “Great little spot when you need something fast, hot and yum. I loved the enthusiasm of the front house staff, they nailed the American deli experience!”
Sam had the chicken schnitzel sandwich. He said, “Really nice and well designed space, it was really busy too. What I ate was a bit of a let down though, the chicken was really dry. I would get something different next time.”
Sarah had the Cuban sandwich. She said, “The vibes were high with the team behind the counter, all super friendly and full of energy. The sandwich I had was freshly made and very tasty; the pickle was a standout. I was pleasantly surprised to see a gluten-free bread option and it was actually really good. I rate this place, though it feels more like a “sometimes treat” kind of spot. The sweet cabinet looked amazing too – very tempting!”
