KIND

www.kindcafe.co.nz

Eat food, not too much, mostly plants”, such is the ethos for our local green eatery coined from Michael Pollan. What really makes KIND different is the social enterprise aspect it shares with its older sister Crave. Where Crave aspires to be “good in the hood”, KIND furthers the story by making Morningside a greener, healthier and by extension, kinder place to live. This includes launching tree-planting initiatives and Growspace, an urban market garden that that develops business skills among migrant and refugee women by growing produce for use in local cafes. We think that’s pretty rad. Also of note is the glass-house style of this eatery, which has been transformed into a lush oasis with loads of hanging plants. Though the menu is primarily plant-based, our carnivores breathed a small sigh of relief when spotted bacon in the add-ons section. Plus, try their range of smoothies, we love their PB&J and coconut with sesame flavours; Lou also swears by their coconut lattes – ultra creamy and satiating. Our waitress recommends the mushroom & leek “ramen” if you’re looking for something warm, and the smashed beans for a lighter alternative. See what our huskies thought below!

Katie had the Mushroom & Leek Ramen with zero carb noodles, spinach, herb broth, black garlic, pine nuts & salsa verde with a miso egg and extra bacon. She also drank a Coconut & Sesame Smoothie. She said “This place is packed so better book in advance! Loving their drink selections and knowing everything on the menu is one of a K I N D — haha geddit geddit?”

Mel had the Mushroom & Leek Ramen with zero carb noodles, spinach, herb broth, black garlic, pine nuts & salsa verde with a miso egg and drank a Vitality Juice. She said “So awesome to finally have a lovely healthy, fresh eatery in the neighbourhood, so spoilt having this right across the street!! Lovely broth with the noodles and mushrooms, left feeling full but not heavy. Can’t wait to try another dish next time. Oh and the people there are friendly and fabulous!”

Bri had the Smashed Beans with kumara & kawa kawa silk, sourdough, coriander, coconut feta & baked seeds and drank a Coconut & Turmeric Smoothie. She said “They know how to make beans taste amazing! Love the atmosphere being surrounded by plants – my happy place.”

Jeffrey had the Mushroom & Leek Ramen with zero carb noodles, spinach, herb broth, black garlic, pine nuts & salsa verde with a miso egg and extra bacon. He also drank a Peanut Butter Espresso Smoothie. He said “Very pretty café, very girly, lots of flower, destress me a little.”

Phil had the Whipped Goats Cheese with chives, beetroot three ways, poached egg, edamame, hung coconut with five grain & hazelnut and drank a Peanut Butter Espresso Smoothie. He said “I really enjoy the coffee and cabinet treats from Kind. Not a huge fan of the breakfast peanut butter espresso. Really liked the whipped goats cheese’s vegetables and sauce but the bread over powered the meal and I didn’t find it very enjoyable.”
