BROWNE STREET

www.brownestreet.co.nz

In recent years, we’ve seen an explosion in variability of the food offerings available — from the creative fusion flavours of Simon & Lee, to plant-based cafes like The Butchers’ Son and pop up sandwich fare like Hare & Turtle. 2018 heralds the rise of the all-day eatery, where diners are offered a broad range of experiences depending on what you feel like on the day and to the hour (because why restrict hollandaise sauce to 8am?) Gone are the days where Denny’s and Maccas were the only choice for eats with your mates at 11pm – now Avondale’s Browne Street eatery is the place to be. Marvel at the modern industrial fit-out featuring white walls, exposed copper pipes and black aluminium train tracks tracing lines in the ceiling. Locally-blown lightbulbs pair well with the circular artwork on the walls. A couple of huskies observed the lack of sound-proofing in the heavily-concreted space so it’s a bit loud, the only upshot being others can’t eavesdrop on your heart-to-heart. We were enamoured by the exciting and inviting menu — Ham Hock and Parmesan-Crusted Eggs on Toast and Maple Walnut Panna Cotta French Toast. We couldn’t sample it all but don’t go changing – we’re coming back for you.

Louise had the Fried Chicken Tacos with corn salsa and momo sauce, and a Flat White. She said “I love the anticipation of visiting an newbie food outlet that has only just been born, especially in the Central West. The space was as chocka as it was loud (cause & effect one might say). Nice fit out, cohesive brand and friendly staff only let down by laggy food delivery (30+ plus mins) but we forgive them – they were only 5 days old.”

Katie had the Beef Udon with red braised beef cheek, toasted sesame & a fried duck egg. Her drink was a Batchwell Pineapple & Ginger Kombucha. She said “The menu items are super enticing — maple panna cotta French toast? Helloooo. I gave in to the lure of beef cheeks though, which was super fragrant and tasty — albiet a bit too sweet for my liking. And highly unsure if those are udon noodles… but I’m not Japanese so hey.”

Mel had the Pork Burger with mature cheddar, apple celeriac remoulade and agria chips and drank a Latte. She said “It was fun checking out this newbie in Avondale, the space was trendy and spacious albiet a little on the noisy side, but that might be just me getting old haha! The food was good and the service friendly and helpful.”

Bri had the Seasonal Local Mushrooms with goat cheese, mushroom ketchup, sage gnocchi and toasted hazelnuts an drank a Berry Smoothie. She said “Absolutely loved the smoothie. There was a bit of a wait for the food, but the cafe was packed and they had just opened that week. The decor was trendy and made for some awesome photos.”

Jeffrey had the Seasonal Local Mushrooms with goat cheese, mushroom ketchup, sage gnocchi and toasted hazelnuts. His drink was a Long Black and he said “Majority of my meal was nice, the goat cheese seems a little sweet which is weird.”

Phil had the Pork Burger with mature cheddar, apple celeriac remoulade and agria chips and drank a Long Black. He said “Good coffee and loved the artwork but found it very hard to hear people next to me talking.”
